It got in the 30′s the rest of the week, but I was not hunting then. This buck a main frame 10 with split brows and G1. Probably 6.5 yrs old. Nice old buck with lot of character and mass. He gross scored 143 and change.

Thanks for sending me there. The Beebe’s are great people and it was an wonderful experience. Nice camp, good food, fun people.

Being a dad and having the opportunity to hunt with my kids is one of the greatest experiences ever. Hearing from clients that have taken their kids hunting with one of my outfitters and bagging their first antlered animal has to run a very close second.

I had the opportunity to arrange a hunt for Smith family this year and it turned out to be one their best family experiences ever. The Smith’s made this a complete family affair with Mom and Dad tagging along while the boys hunted whitetail bucks here in my home state of Oklahoma. I set them up with one of my outfitters that my 12 year old son and I have hunted with on several occassions so I knew they would not be disappointed. Troy, (my outfitter) is great with kids and very patient, he has a very comfortable lodge with all the ammenities and fantastic home cooked meals. In four days of hunting both of the boys were able to harvest their first bucks.

Here is what Mrs. Smith had to say in a recent email…

Wasn’t sure if you had talked to Troy or not about our
trip; we wanted to personally say thanks because it was an amazing experience
for our family.

Both boys got themselves an 8 point, and they couldn’t
have been more excited over the whole thing.

Thanks again,

The Smith Family

Greg Ray 918 407 2586 or email greg@fishandhunttheworld.com

Mike and I had a great time. Todd and his son guided us each
to a moose, a black bear, and a mule deer. Our primary goal was to bag a
moose and we were certainly not disappointed. The rut was on and the
bulls were more active than normal. On the evening of our first full day
of hunting, Mike shot a nice bull. These moose are huge and I was shocked
at how much he weighted. We were fortunate he dropped not far from a road
so that we could haul him back to camp after getting help so that seven of us
could get him into the truck. We continued to hunt for my moose and took
the bears and mule deer while searching for a monster bull. We
passed on several smaller bulls while awaiting for a chance at a 50 inch
bull. We got responses from several rutting bulls but the days passed
without a really large bull showing. We finally saw a real shooter
but I was not able to get a clear shot. (Mike could have dropped him
easily since he did have a clear look at less than 60 yards!)

I was down to the last two days of the hunt when Mike suddenly
shouted “Huge Bull”! I got a little excited and missed
my first shot. Dropped him on my second shot. My 50 inch bull is at the taxidermy shop and I expect to get the shoulder mount next year. By the way, on the last dayof our hunt, Mike and Todd saw an even larger bull that stood for pictures at
70 yards and kept milling around for 30 minutes. Of course, no one had an unfilled tag so he’s still there for next year.

Thanks for a great hunt.

The only thing I enjoy more than hunting, is hunting with my son! I have had some proud moments over the years but I believe this one tops them all… For now any way. I am sure there will be plenty more along the way. My 12 year old son Eddie just took his first buck and as you can see from his picture it’s not a kids typical first buck. I don’t want to steal any of his thunder, so I am turning the story over to Eddie in his own words… (Be on the look out for the Video of Eddies hunt, I hope to post it soon)

I started hunting with my dad when I was 5 years old. When I turned 8 I saved my money for my first gun; a Rossi with 243, .22, and 20 guage barrels. My dad took me on my first hunt with I was 8 on a wild hog hunt in Texas. I killed 3 hogs on that hunt and each one only took one shot. ( my dad says I have a good trigger squeeze). Since then I have hunted various types of animals, such as turkey, more wild hogs, ducks, and does.

My dad always told me when I turned 12 and if I was shooting good and being safe with my gun I could start hunting bucks. I started saving up for my second rifle a .308 bolt action, my dad helped me get it from our friends who own a sporting goods store in Minnesota.

This year I went on my first buck hunt here in Oklahoma with one of my dads outfitters. I shot the buck from the same stand I shot my first doe from “my lucky stand” when I was 9. It seemed like we sat in the stand for a really long time, but finally does, fawns and some small bucks started showing up, they were fun to watch. Then out of no where this giant buck showed up and I knew he was a shooter. We had to wait awhile for him to give me a good shot, but when he turned sideways I pulled the trigger, he only went about 25 yards before he fell over. The buck I shot scored 149 1/8″ B&C!

I look forward to hunting more with my dad in the future; he say’s if I keep my grades up I can go hunt black bear in Alberta or Idaho. My dream hunt is a safari in Africa when I am around 25 years old or if I have the opportunity sooner I would take it.

I hope you enjoyed my story. Eddie Ray

You can hear the excitement in their voice and usually learn something new about the area they had just visited.
Thank you for a great hunt with Ron in New Mexico! During my 4 days of hunting Ron called up at least 10 bulls including one bull that had to be close to the 400″ mark, unfortunately I did not have a shot opportunity at him.

On the fourth morning Ron called up a 5×6 that I was able to harvest. We also saw two other bulls that we could not get a shot at. Ron was a pleasure to hunt with and he can really call in the bulls.

You were right on target with all the information you provided to me. I would highly recommend you for anyone wanting to book an elk hunt!

Upon arrival I met with the outfitter, where he produced aerial photos of his hunting property that included marked spots for each of his tree stands. He went over each stand with me and made suggestions on how to hunt each one. We then toured the parameter of the property, which was a heavily wooded area with several creeks running through it and surrounded by grasslands.

The outfitter had mowed trails starting approximately one quarter of a mile away from the edge of the timber where the trail continued through the woods to each very well marked treestand. I never had any problem finding my stands in the dark.

During my hunt I encountered shooter bucks every eveing (mornings were a bit slow, I’m guess since it was mid September) On my third evening just before last shooting light another Kansas Trophy Whitetail showed himself at less than 90 yards from my stand, not too sure where he came from, he was just there. I knew right away that I would not have to think about this one. Since the buck was facing me head on, (he was looking at the doe directly below my stand) I had my crosshairs on him for what seemed like an eternity, I could literally see it getting darker in my scope. Finally, he presented me with the shot I needed and after the smoke cleared all I could see was this massive buck running for cover where he disappeared. Seconds later I could hear a deer running behind my stand and was not too sure if it was him or the doe that had been below my stand.

I sat in my stand until it was dark and decided to see if I could find blood. I went directly to the spot I had marked and found nothing, no blood, no hair, nothing! You know how it goes, you start doubting yourself and wonder if you pulled the shot or shot over his back. After a short search of the area I found a massive pool of blood that confirmed 250 grains of Barnes Copper had hit its mark. It only took another 20 yards and there was 250 pounds of Kansas Whitetail piled up with evidence of a double lung shot on his side.

A phone call to my outfitter and a 30 minute wait was all it took to get my hero shots and this big boy loaded into the back of the truck.

If you are looking for a budget Kansas Trophy Whitetail hunt, then I would highly recommend this outfitter. He did a great job of familiarizing me with the area and stands, it was obvious that he had spent time preparing for hunters to show up.

Danny C. – 2010 Brown Bear/Moose Hunt

Danny C. appears to be one of those hunters that are blessed with good luck. Of course hunting in an area that has good game populations, hiring a competent guide, and then following his directions often produces it’s own kind of luck. Danny joined us from Panama with several of his regular hunting companions. They arrived on September 23 and were immediately drenched in the season’s worst storm.

Danny’s primary desire was to kill a big Brown Bear. However, he also wanted to take a Moose if he got the chance. Garrett was guiding him and they spent the first few days looking for a bear, now the rut was in full swing and with the storm growing in intensity, Danny and Garrett decided to switch to moose. They had seen several good bulls with a group of cows in one of the traditional rutting areas. He and Danny spent the next day looking the herd over and trying to select the best out of a group of 4 or 5 bulls and 25 cows. On the second day they got up early and arrived at the field just before day break. There were a lot of cows milling about in the willows with the bulls. This day the wind was working against them blowing away from Danny and Garrett towards the group of moose. With the storm still raging overhead, Garrett told Danny that in order to put the odds in his favor, they would need to bush-whack through almost a mile of wet marshland. After some consideration, Danny let Garrett know he was up to the task. About 400 yards and a few moments of exertion later, the two hunters stumbled upon a hidden bear trail that took them along a salmon stream and allowed them to bypass the herd and circle around with the wind blowing in their favor. Now the real work began. It was mid afternoon and Garrett had an idea where a monster bull was, but in order to reach a position to take a shot, they would need to weave right through the herd in between cows and bulls at varying distances. It took all of Garrett’s skill as a guide and all of Danny’s determination as a hunter to sneak their way through the group while having the storm of the season still pounding on top of them. Around 45 minutes of adrenalin fueled action led the two men towards the large bull they have been working all day to get to.

The hunters spotted the tips of its antlers protruding through the tops of shoulder height willows. But had no shot they had no choice but to keep moving in the willows trying to get a clear shot. The bull was working a hot cow and kept moving, Garrett called to the bull with a few grunts. The bull stopped in its tracks and turned toward them at 25 feet and stared the two down. With the bull in place, Garrett told Danny to take the shot. Danny was very nervous with the bull so close, but centered his scope on the big bull moose chest and pulled the trigger. At the shot the bull turned and started away. When the moose had stopped a few yards away. Danny let off another shot that hit the monster bull square in the ribs and put the moose down for good. The next day was spent packing the meat, cape, and horns back to camp while relishing in the past days adventures.

Now it was time to try for a Brown Bear, Danny was still pumped from the harvest of his moose at very close range. The plan was to start checking some of the many salmon holes in the area. Garrett and Danny would look for fresh sign of where a good sized trophy Brown Bear had been feeding on the Salmon during the last few days. Then they would put up a spike camp and hunt the bear for several days. After checking the first hole and in the process of moving to the next, you guessed it! a good Brown Bear was spotted. They quickly left the ATV and did some maneuvering to keep down wind of the Brownie and moved in for a shot. They had to stalk about 800 yards on the beach using all the available cover, with the bear moving they had to hurry, they were able to stalk to 96 yards Danny calmed his nerves and placed the slug in the bread basket. His second trophy was down. There was a lot of celebrating in camp that night as he and his buddies now had 2 Brown Bear and a Moose in the bag.

Long time client and great friend Anthony Reiss recently went to one of my destinations in Costa Rica with his Father, Brother and Son to catch Tarpon and apparently they hit the motherload! Without stealing too much thunder the combination of landing a 180# Tarpon and numerous Tarpon over 100#’s on the fly made for one hell of a trip.

I will have the rest of the pictures posted in the “Photo Album” section soon. If you would like more information on this outfitter contact Greg Ray 918 407 2586 or email greg@outdoor-connection.com

Here is Anthony’s story…

Greg,

I would like to take a moment to comment on our trip this past month in Costa Rica. Outdoor Connection and Fish & Hunt The World did an excellent job of booking our trip. We arrived in San Jose at approximately 2:00 pm and hired a tour guide to show us the town. The next morning we flew to a small village where we were awaited by the staff. We boarded a pontoon boat and up the river we went to the lodge.

The lodge is built on the edge of the Rio Colorado in the middle of the rain forest. What an incredible place in the middle of the jungle. The staff, food and service were extremely good. The rooms were very roomy and most definitely comfortable. The morning we arrived we dropped off our gear, ate some breakfast and then headed out for tarpon. We boarded the boat and went about ten minutes down river to where the Rio Colorado and the Carribean Sea meet. Once we were past the mouth of the river my eyes almost fell out of my head when I noticed hundreds of adult tarpon rolling everywhere. I immediately grabbed my fly rod and started whirling a fly towards the tarpon all around the boat. Within less than one minute a giant tarpon smashed my fly. The guide “ Cliff “ started yelling “ big tarpon “ I set the hook on this monster and he immediately took off and snapped my rod in half. The 12 wt Sage rod was brand new and broken. The fish was still on the line and all I had was a stub of a rod and my Abel reel. You can probably guess the rest of the story. However; there were still hundreds of tarpon all around us. Two minutes later my brother “ Chris Reiss “ hooked into and landed about an 80lb tarpon.

I eventually landed a 130 lb tarpon along with countless others that were above the 100lb mark. My son and father were fishing together and between the two of them they landed over 2,000 lbs of tarpon in 4 days. The largest being 180lbs on conventional tackle.

The trip did not leave us disappointed or with any additional energy. We appreciate you helping us select such a wonderful spot to chase such a fascinating sport fish.

We have several outfitters in Florida that offer these hunts. For more details give me a call. Greg Ray 918 407 2586 or email greg@outdoor-connection.com

Awesome outfitter, staff, just everything about the trip was wonderful! I attached a picture of my 9’6″ gator, taken with my bow. The whole thing was really cool and I’ll probably write an article about it. We also got the whole thing on film, so I’ll send you that once I edit it.

and this is the same outfitter that put another Fish and Hunt the World customer on a 170 class whitetail this past season. http://blog.fishandhunttheworld.com/cancellation-and-discounted-trips/congratulations/

Be sure to contact me if you would like to check availability with any of the hunts this outfitter has to offer.

Greg Ray 918 407 2586 or email greg@outdoor-connection.com

This outfitting business was born out of a deep appreciation and love of the great outdoors. After 30 years of hunting in various zones of Alberta, and guiding for several years in Alberta and the Northwest Territories, Greg D. decided that the time was right to become a full time outfitter. His experience and expertise are a large component in the success of his business.

Robb, a small hamlet nestled into the foothills of the majestic Rocky Mountains, is an ideal spot for hunting Alberta’s choice game. Moose, elk, deer, black bear, and wolves are abundant in this zone. The choice to set up an outfitting operation in this area was not difficult. Robb is surrounded by prime hunting land, unspoiled by fences and private land. Here prime animals live minutes from town. It is not uncommon to see deer, elk, and bears within the town limits. Even the odd moose will make a brief visit to town!

A big hit with clients, Bo and Max make up the remainder of the personnel! They enjoy the hunters and visa-versa! They have accompanied Greg to spring bear camps and moose hunts. They keep the cook company while the hunters are out and they love it as much as the rest of us! Both are great fans of wild meat and never turn down a handout!

All hunts include accommodations, meals, guide and transportation to and from the Edmonton International Airport.

Moose Hunts

Hunt the giant of the deer family in the secluded forests of Alberta.

They have 6 day hunts available October and November and also offer 10 day hunts. These hunts are done from a bush camp setting out of outfitters tents with wood burning stoves.

Timber Wolf Hunts

Their timber wolf hunts are located in the scenic foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The large timber wolves of this region vary in color and are beautiful animals with thick rich coats. Hunts are done over baits from ground blinds. This is a 6 day hunting package available December through March.

Bear Hunts

Spot and stalk spring bear-a very exciting way to hunt for spring black bear! Their spot and stalk hunts are a 6 day hunt in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. Their new hunting zone in northern Alberta allows baiting, so hunts can be done from blinds or stands. We will have them fly into Edmonton and they will be picked up there instead of having them fly to High Level. They will need to stay overnight in Edmonton on the way in as well as the way out because of the length of the drive. They will be picked up at their hotel early morning and dropped off in the evening to catch their flight home the following day.

Baited Hunts

They now offer baited bear hunts from blinds or stands. The camp includes outfitters’ heated wall tents. The hunt dates are May 15-June 15 and include a good ratio of color-phase bears. It is a 6 day hunt with 2×1 guide service and allows a two bear harvest.

Whitetail Hunt

Hunt Whitetail Deer in the foothills of the Rockies in Alberta. Alberta is home to some of the largest whitetail deer in the world and the hunts span 6 days.

All hunts with High Ridge Outfitters include:

Meals

Accommodation

Licenses

Tags

Transportation to and from the Edmonton International Airport

6% GST (government sales tax) is not included in list price.

This particular hunt is in one of our top end lodges, no roughing it here! I will add a special next week on three different lodges that offer wild boar hunts.

Greg,

Just got back from our hog hunt in Texas. We had a blast, those guys really did it up for us. The food and accommodations were five star. Ron lined up a dog hunt one night and I will just say if you haven’t done that you need too! Two of the guys had not bagged a hog by Saturday night and they insisted we stay Sunday until everyone at least had a good opportunity. Sunday was a blast even in the rain. Really a neat experience. Thanks, Jack C
