They have received multiple awards for harvesting the largest species in their respective categories over the past few years. Each year at the annual Alberta Professional Outfitter’s Society Convention, there are only eight awards available to the Province’s 450 outfitters for species hunted by them and the odds of winning one of these coveted awards is less than 2%. This past year, we received the award for the ‘Largest Elk, Archery on an Outfitted Hunt’. They recently also received the award for the ‘Largest Mule Deer, Archery on an Outfitted hunt’. In previous years they have also won the award for the ‘Largest Whitetail – Archery on an Outfitted Hunt’ on two occasions and the award for the ‘Largest Moose – Archery on an Outfitted Hunt’. Theyhave access to the best area and guides in the province!

They are the only outfitter in the province that has won awards for each of our big game (Mule Deer, Moose, Whitetail Deer and Elk)

All of their ‘camps’ are customized, small and personal with typically only 2 to 4 hunters, the guide(s) and a cook in any one camp. They pride ourselves in their sharp pricing, small camps and excellent service. They do not use a central facility, such as a lodge, as that would severely restrict our hunting options. Instead they operate many small camps located where the animals are, not where it might be more financially advantageous to them. They also have the capacity to accommodate larger groups upon request, however the daily hunting parties would be broken up using several different guides to spread the hunters out and provide more manageable opportunities for each individual hunter.

Hey Greg

Just a note to let you know that I still have openings for drop camp elk hunters 2nd and 3rd season. I’ll take one hunter even. Dates are Oct 21-27 or Nov 6-12. I also have a great archery rut eastern plains mule deer hunt that should be fantastic. No other hunters during the rut and I have 2 land owner tags. Normal price is $5500 each plus 1K land owner voucher . I’ll do the hunt for half on my end. So $2750 plus the land owner still has his fee of 1K for the voucher totaling $3750. A top notch trophy unit. Dates are mid November in the rut.. I also have a Muzzle Loader Antelope buck land owner tag hunt for 2K including the land owner voucher. The biggest buck on the 30,000 acre ranch did not get harvested, so he’s still out there. Season dates are Oct 20 – 28 any 3 days or until succesfull. 100% success in the past.

Montana Big Game Outfitter

Whether you’re looking for a high adventure hunting camp for big game such as elk, deer, antelope, bear, mountain lion, or sheep; or for birds such as Huns, sharp-tail grouse, sand hill crane, ducks, or geese; or for a summer vacation for your family, this outfitter will take you on the Montana adventure of a lifetime. They have been providing fully guided and outfitted hunts for forty years. Over the years, they have guided hunters in seven mountain ranges of Montana, always with the goal to provide our guests the best in hunting opportunity. Their 20,000 acre main lease in central Montana is home to abundant wildlife year round. Habitat ranges from timbered plateaus and mountain foothills to prairie pastures, creek bottoms, river bottom, hayfields, and several thousand acres of grain fields. They are also permitted to outfit for specialized hunts on several large public lands areas in southwest Montana. This combination of operating area is the best for getting into plentiful and varied game! The excessive predation by wolves in western Montana has not occurred in their part of the state.

All hunts are guided and fair chase. Guide ratio is two hunters per guide, or a single hunter per guide. They welcome young hunters with their parents. Most hunts involve travel by vehicle, and hunting on foot. Terrain is such that they can accommodate hunters with limited mobility. Horses are used in unique locations. All hunts include a fully equipped camp with heated sleeping quarters. Main camp features a comfortable lodge located on the ranch. Lodging and home cooked meals are provided. Capping of trophies and preparation of meat for processing is included as part of your guided hunt. Bring your weapon, a sleeping bag, and hunting clothes; they’ll take care of the rest.

Accommodations

They operate comfortable camps on their private ranch leases. Because they are accessible by vehicle, you have more time to hunt! Main camp features a roomy, renovated building once used by the local Hutterite Colony as a dining hall. Spike camps feature spacious tents. All camps include heated sleeping arrangements with propane lights and cots. A roomy kitchen is the social center of camp.

Main camp is located in prime big game country, with plentiful elk, deer, and antelope. Thousands of acres of nearby cropland and river bottom provide excellent bird hunting opportunity. Spike camps are located in the Big Belt Mountains and Elkhorn Mountains.

They offer guided trophy hunts from the Elkhorn camp. The Elkhorn’s are managed for trophy elk and mule deer. All hunters may take spike bulls and whitetail deer there. You must draw a special permit for trophy elk and mule deer after receiving your big game license.

Archery Hunts

Archery hunting is exciting and productive, due to excellent game populations and varied topography that is to the hunter’s advantage. In their area, the wind is always a factor to be considered. Elevation is between 5,000 and 6,000 feet.

Sometimes they call elk, and sometimes they just have to stay out of their sight as they come in to their blinds. Either way, having a big bull, or a whole herd of elk, right in front of your sights is about as exciting as hunting can be!

It’s surprising how snakey and sneaky an older mule deer or whitetail can be in early fall. He’s definitely a stalking job! Don’t be surprised if you have a whitetail buck peg you in the wide open!

A special word about archery hunting for antelope: don’t plan on sitting (bored) over a water hole or near a fence crossing. They have found much more excitement and success in stalking good bucks and utilizing decoys.

Rifle Hunts

Most of their rifle hunts are conducted on private land, with good populations of elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, and antelope. Antelope hunting is an option in combination with elk and deer on early rifle hunts. Over the years, they can’t say that any one week is better for getting big bull elk than another. Big bucks, on the other hand, definitely are easier to come by later in the season.

When choosing a rifle for your hunt, pick your favorite: the one you shoot most often. You’ll be more accurate with it. Favorite calibers here are .270, .30-06, 7mm, 300. Choose the lightest effective load recommended for the caliber, so you have the flattest, fastest possible trajectory. A word about scopes: Four power is sufficient. Rifle season includes muzzleloader hunting. Because hunter numbers are controlled, hunting with a muzzleloader is a viable option for the dedicated hunter.

Where is Monte’s main camp?
Their main camp is near the small community of Martinsdale, between the Little Belt, Castle, and Crazy mountain ranges. By highway, they are about 120 miles northwest of Billings.

Where is the nearest airport?
They are located centrally between Bozeman, Helena, Great Falls, and Billings airports. The best airfare prices are usually to Billings. The easiest highway route to camp is from Billings. If you fly your personal plane, the nearest local airports are Harlowton and White Sulfur Springs.

In case of emergency, what medical services are available?
Emergency hospital services are available within half an hour to forty-five minutes at Harlowton and White Sulfur Springs hospitals. If more specialized care is needed, ambulance service is available to Billings, which is the largest medical center between Denver and Seattle.

What gear should I bring?
In addition to your weapon, bring a warm sleeping bag, and warm clothes that can be layered. Bring rain gear for early fall hunts. Bring a hooded jacket, lug soled boots, insulated packs, and extra pairs of warm gloves. A warm cap with earflaps is a good idea in their windy country. Bring a canteen, flashlight, matches, a small daypack, camera, and personal items. 400 square inches hunter orange (normal vest) is required for all rifle hunting, and recommended for bird hunting.

What is camp like?
Their main camp is headquartered in a refurbished, large building once used by the local Hutterite Colony as a dining hall with a spectacular view of the Little Belt and Castle Mountains. The building is solid, well insulated, and spacious. Heat is provided by propane and wood. A 12 volt system powers water pumps and lights. Because of the camp location beneath a hill, cell phone service is not available; however, excellent service is available on most of the ranch. Sleeping quarters are dormitory style, with cots and foam pads provided. Hunters must bring their own sleeping bags, towels, and personal toiletries. Bring an extra pad and pillow if you wish. Spike camps are comfortable tent camps; heated, and furnished with cots for sleeping.

What kind of food is provided?
Meals are cooked from scratch in the spacious kitchen. We ask you to advise us beforehand of special diet needs such as diabetic, low sodium, wheat free, etc. Breakfasts and dinners are served family style in camp. Lunches may be sack lunches in the field, or may be at camp, depending on the day. Cookies and sandwich makings are available for those who wish to have a between meal snack. They do not provide candy or other “store bought” snack items. Beverages available are water, juice, milk, coffee, tea, and cocoa. They do not provide or serve alcoholic beverages. Crew does not partake of alcohol.

What meat processing and taxidermy services are available?
The nearest available meat processing plants are in Helena, Lewistown, or Billings, about two hours away. These facilities charge about $100 per deer or antelope; $200 per elk. Shipping is additional. In 2008, they also had access to a mobile meat processing service, which comes right to the camp to process more than one animal. They have a clean cutting room available for hunters who wish to de-bone their own meat for transport home. Processed meat donations are accepted by the local food banks.

They deal with two good taxidermists in Townsend. They are quick, and do a good job. Their work is on display at our camp.

Patrick (our outfitter) is very well organized and has an excellent property for both antelope and mule deer. In fact I believe he as one archery mule deer tag left if anyone is interested.

We are only 2 months away from Archery Elk season, and we still need a few more hunters.

Last year we purchased Keating Outfitters and the unit that came with it, which added 300 square miles to our hunting area. This allows us to hunt over 450 square miles of country ( over 260,000 acres). Many bulls have been taken out of this unit over the last 30 years, and we look forward to hunting on it this season!

Our elk number are climbing again, thanks to a substantial decrease of wolves in our area. This elk season looks like it’s going to be great!

We would like to have 4 more archery hunters, we have openings between the dates of September 10-23. We would love to have 2 more rifle hunters October 15-21, and 2 more November 2-8. Price on all hunts is $3841.15 which includes everything.

Thanks for your help!

I wanted to include this long range shooting article from one of my outfitters and also share with you one of the best elk specials I’ve seen in quite sometime, especially for Utah Elk. If you’ve even thought about an elk hunt you know the quality that Utah can produce. Be sure to check this one out…

A look at accuracy and precision
by Master Ballistician Bryan Litz.

If you’re a long range hunter (varmints to big game) or tactical shooter, or just anyone interested in hitting small targets at long range with one or few rifle shots, this message is for you. If you’re a long range prone, F-class, or Benchrest shooter, this may still be interesting for you but not as relevant given that these disciplines allow sighter shots before a record string is fired.

Far too often I hear of shooters agonizing over improving the precision of their hunting rifle from 1.0 MOA groups to .5 MOA groups, or from .5 MOA groups to .25 MOA groups. While a precise rifle/ammo combination that’s capable of shooting small groups is an asset to the long range shooter, the challenge of hitting targets at long range involves more than just shooting small groups.

Group size is a measure of precision. Regardless of where the group is on the target, a small group means good precision. However, to hit targets at long range, you also need accuracy. Accuracy is the measure of how close your shots hit in relation to your point of aim. The importance of accuracy is often overlooked because many shooters think that: “Precision is the hard part, and once I get my group size down, all I have to do is adjust my scope to hit in the center of the target and I’m good-to-go”. If you’re only interested in hitting targets at short range, this logic is sound. However, if you’re trying to hit distant targets where range, wind, and other variables have a great effect on your bullets’ trajectory, then accuracy is not necessarily so easy to achieve. You have to understand the effects of bullet drop, wind deflection, rifle cant, shooting at uphill/downhill angles, etc. If you don’t know how to measure and account for these variables, you won’t hit your target regardless of how much precision your rifle is capable of.

The point of this article is not to teach the reader about all of the details and variables involved in long range shooting. The point is just to provoke some thought about the relative importance of accuracy and precision in certain shooting objectives. As with many challenges, the greatest success is often realized when a balanced approach is taken as opposed to focusing completely on one aspect of the task while ignoring others. A dragster with the most powerful engine doesn’t win if the tires don’t get good traction.

Precision is very important, but for those hunters who spend all their time at the loading bench trying to make a 1 MOA rifle shoot ½ MOA groups, my advice is to consider a more balanced approach and do things to improve your accuracy as well as your precision. Get out and practice shooting the rifle at long range. Learn how your rifles’ point of impact is affected by shooting from various positions, not just a solid bench rest. Learn about the variables that affect your trajectory and how to correct your sights so the bullet hits your point of aim. Applying effort in these areas will improve your accuracy, and your success at hitting targets at long range.

For the 2011 season we just added an additional 13,000 acres of prime November elk habitat to our 60,000 + acre Grass Valley CWMU. This additional acreage has never been in the CWMU program and is considered by many locals including myself to be a haven for migrating elk. This new addition always has a resident herd of elk, but it really loads up during the month of November and at any given time can winter over 1,000 head of elk. I’m expecting this hunt to have 100% opportunity with some of the best bulls of the year will being taken during this November time frame.
